I tend to think Black Bears are not that aggressive.
The few I have seen on the AT run out of site just as I realize what they are.
My son went to Philmont, and they has strict camping rules to follow because there were grisly bears in the area. At night, the food, trash, cookware, etc was kept in a bear bag and suspended between trees (& away from the camp.) No deodorant and the scouts couldn't sleep in clothes soiled with food.
